Condoms are an essential contraception option for pleasurable and safe sex. Although putting on a condom may seem straightforward, especially if you know what you're doing, many people unknowingly make mistakes that can reduce its effectiveness.

A properly worn condom is one of the best methods to prevent unintended pregnancies and sexually transmitted infections (STIs) (some of which can lead to cancer or AIDS). However, if it’s not applied correctly, it can break, slip off, or fail to provide full protection.

So, how do you properly put on a condom? Are you sure you’re doing it right? We understand that whether you’re new to condom use or just want to double-check your technique, mastering the basics means you won’t have to worry about the process and possibly spoil the fun.

Understanding the right way to put on a condom ensures maximum safety and comfort for both partners. This guide will walk you through the step-by-step process of how to put on a condom correctly for a secure and worry-free experience.

Putting on a condom, but first!

Before you even open that condom wrapper, there are a couple of important things to consider.

First, don’t just grab any condom off the shelf—there’s more to consider than you might think. For example, size, shape, texture, and even flavor can impact how a condom fits and feels.

A condom that’s too tight may be uncomfortable or break, while one that’s too loose can slip off. Before you get started, make sure you’ve found a style that fits snugly and enhances pleasure. If you’re unsure, check out guides like "Condoms: choosing the one for you."

Second, always check the expiration date before using a condom– it’s printed on the wrapper or box. An expired condom can have weakened latex, increasing the risk of tearing and making it less effective at preventing pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections.

Additionally, if the condom wrapper is torn or shows any signs of exposure to extreme heat or cold from improper storage, it's best to discard it. Using a compromised condom increases the risk of failure, so always opt for one in perfect condition.

How to put on a condom properly?

1. Open the condom packet carefully

Push the condom down aways from the side you are opening (so you don’t rip the condom) and then tear open the condom packet gently along the edge, using your fingers. Never open the packet with a pair of scissors, knife, or teeth as you might accidentally tear the condom.

Additionally, if you notice any tears, rips, holes, dryness, or an odd smell, discard the current one and use a completely new one. Always handle the condom with clean, dry hands to maintain its integrity.

2. Roll it in the right direction

Hold the condom by the tip (the tip end should be pointing up like a little hat) and check which way it unrolls. The correct side should roll down above the rest of the latex, not underneath.

If you accidentally place it inside out, it’ll be a lot harder to roll down and might not cover your penis all the ways. Instead, discard it and use a new condom for safety.

3. Pinch the tip and unroll the condom

Before rolling the condom down, pinch the reservoir tip to remove trapped air and leave space for semen collection. This helps prevent breakage.

Place the condom over the tip of the penis and, while still gently squeezing the tip with one hand, roll it down the length of your erect penis with the other. The ring should be at or near the base of the shaft.

4. Smooth out any air bubbles

After fully unrolling the condom, gently run your fingers along its surface to remove any trapped air bubbles, as these can increase the risk of breakage during intercourse. A properly fitted condom should feel secure yet comfortable, providing both safety and ease of use.

5. Discard condom

Right after sex, before you pull out your penis out of your partner’s body, hold the condom at the base of the penis to make sure it doesn’t slip off while you do. Tie a knot in the condom so that none of the contents spill out, then wrap it in tissue and put it in the bin.
