Sex hormones are vital for sexual development, reproduction, and other bodily functions. Made by the adrenal glands and the gonads (ovaries in females and testes in males), they play a crucial role in determining sexual traits, behaviors, and the reproductive process. 

But today, we will be discussing female sex hormones. From the first sign of puberty to the transition of menopause, these hormones shape nearly every phase of a woman’s life. 

They are powerful chemical messengers that do more than just regulate reproductive health, such as influencing mood, menstruation, breast development, hair health, and even memory. 

While we often hear about estrogen and progesterone, the female hormonal ecosystem is far more complex and dynamic than most realize.

Female sex hormones: Types

The female body has three main female hormones. These are estrogen, progesterone, and a very small amount of testosterone. 

1. Estrogen

Produced by the ovaries, adrenal glands, and fat cells, the primary function of this hormone is to control most of the female hormonal functions. It regulates the menstrual cycle, prepares the uterus for pregnancy, and supports the health of the bones, skin, and heart. 

Estrogen levels fluctuate throughout a woman’s cycle, especially during the initial trimester of pregnancy, where they can cause them to develop symptoms like hormonal change, exhaustion, nausea, libido mismatch, breast sensitivity, and potentially increased sexual desire

Similarly, during menopause, estrogen levels significantly decrease, leading to symptoms like hot flashes, mood changes, and vaginal dryness.

2. Progesterone 

Produced mainly in the ovaries after ovulation, progesterone prepares the uterus for a fertilized egg and supports the reproductive system for early pregnancy. It helps thicken the uterine lining, prevents muscle contractions in the uterus, and balances the effects of estrogen. 

If pregnancy doesn't occur, progesterone levels drop, triggering menstruation. Low levels of progesterone can lead to irregular periods, fertility issues, or difficulty maintaining a pregnancy.

3. Testosterone

Though often considered a male hormone, woman also produce a small amount of testosterone in their ovaries and adrenal glands. It plays a role in libido, muscle strength, mood regulation, and energy levels. 

Testosterone imbalances can lead to conditions like polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), causing symptoms such as acne, irregular periods, or excess red blood cell production and hair growth.

Female sex hormones: Roles

Female sex hormones are a key element in various bodily functions. Here’s how they perfectly fit into various roles for the human body. 

1. Puberty

Females typically enter puberty between the ages of 8 and 13, and estrogen and progesterone play an important role in initiating it. These two hormones, together, stimulate the development of sexual characteristics such as: 

  • Increased height 

  • Breast development

  • Start of the menstrual cycle 

  • Widening of the pelvis and hips 

  • Increased oil production in the skin 

  • Increased fat storage on the hips, buttocks, and thighs 

2. Menstruation 

Menstruation, also known as a period, is the monthly shedding of the uterine lining in females, a process that occurs as part of the menstrual cycle. Estrogen and progesterone regulate the menstrual cycle by controlling the thickening and shedding of the uterine lining. 

Estrogen helps build the lining in the first half of the cycle, while progesterone stabilizes it in the second half. If no fertilization occurs, hormone levels drop, triggering menstruation.

3. Pregnancy 

Following the fertilized egg's implantation in the wall of the uterus, the placenta begins to develop and starts producing a number of hormones, including: 

  • Progesteron

  • Relaxin

  • Human Chorionic Gonadotropin (hCG) 

During the first few weeks of pregnancy, progesterone levels rise significantly to support fetal development and prepare the body for childbirth. 

Relaxin production prevents uterine contractions throughout pregnancy, and near the end, it helps relax the pelvic ligaments and tendons. 

The rising hCG levels in the body then stimulate further production of estrogen and progesterone. This rapid increase in hormones leads to early pregnancy symptoms, such as nausea, vomiting, and the need to urinate more often. 

Finally, hormone levels decrease after pregnancy ends and slowly return to pre-pregnancy levels. 

4. Menopause

Menopause refers to the period when women stop having menstrual periods and are no longer able to become pregnant. It primarily occurs due to the natural aging of the ovaries, resulting in a subsequent decline in the production of estrogen and progesterone. 

Declining hormone levels cause common symptoms like irreregular periods, hot flashes, mood changes, sleeping difficulties, and vaginal dryness. Hormone replacement therapy is sometimes recommended to ease severe symptoms and maintain bone and heart health post-menopause.

5. Sexual desire and arousal

Estrogen and testosterone both influence sexual desire, fantasies, and arousal in women. While estrogen maintains vaginal health and lubrication for a comfortable sexual experience, testosterone plays an important role in libido. 

Fluctuations or deficiencies in these hormones—often due to stress, age, or medical conditions—can reduce sexual desire and satisfaction.
