Arousal can be triggered by touch, scent, sound, thoughts, or sexual activities, including intercourse and masturbation. But what actually happens inside your body when desire kicks in? What is sexual arousal?

Sexual arousal is the body’s physical and emotional response to sexual stimuli, involving increased blood flow, heightened sensitivity, and mental anticipation. Touch, thoughts, visual cues, or emotional intimacy can trigger it. 

Arousal activates both the brain and body, preparing for potential sexual activity. Though it varies among individuals, it’s influenced by hormones, mood, attraction, and overall health, making it a deeply personal and complex experience.

Difference between male and female arousal

Your physical reaction to arousal, naturally, hinges on your genitals. However, there are some commonalities in how most individuals perceive arousal. If you have a vagina, that might result in the swelling of the clitoris and labia. If you have a penis, this blood flow causes an erection.

Mainstream media often highlights the differences between male and female brains, particularly in relation to sex. Despite this emphasis, men and women have significant structural similarities in their brains.

According to a 2012 study that utilized fMRI technology to examine the brain while participants viewed erotic videos. This allowed researchers to monitor the brain's response during arousal.

The study found that sexual stimuli activated the amygdala and thalamus more in men, but had a generally similar effect across all subjects. It’s important to recognize that these studies frequently exclude intersex and transgender individuals.

Sexual response cycle

There are four stages of the sexual response cycle, including: 

  1. Desire (libido or excitement)

  2. Arousal (sometimes called plateau)

  3. Orgasm

  4. Resolution

Phase 1: Desire

The initial phase may take anywhere from a few minutes to several hours and can involve any of the following: 

  • Muscle tension rises

  • Nipples may become stiff or erect

  • Heart rate increases and breathing accelerates

  • Skin can become red, with blotches potentially showing up on your chest and back

  • Increased blood flow to your genitals leads to swelling of the clitoris and the resulting erection

  • If you have a vagina, you may feel it get “wet” or see your breasts become fuller

  • If you have a penis, you may see your testicles swell or your scrotum tighten, and you may begin secreting a lubricating liquid from the tip of your penis

Phase 2: Arousal

The arousal phase lasts until just before orgasm and could include:

  • The shifts in the desire phase become even more intense

  • The vagina becomes engorged due to heightened blood circulation, causing the vaginal walls to take on a deep purple hue

  • The woman's clitoris becomes highly sensitive and retracts under the clitoral hood to avoid direct stimulation from the penis

  • The man's scrotum contracts

  • Breathing, heart rate, and blood pressure continue to rise

  • Muscle spasms can occur in the feet, face, and hands

  • Muscle tension tends to increase

Phase 3: Orgasm

This phase marks the climax of the sexual response cycle. It is the shortest phase, usually lasting only a few seconds. The orgasm phase may include:

  • Uncontrolled muscle contractions or twitching

  • Blood pressure, heart rate, and breathing are at peak levels

  • A sudden and intense release of sexual tension occurs

  • Tightening of vaginal muscles

  • Ejaculation (the process of releasing semen from the penis)

  • A rash, also known as a “sex flush,” can develop across your whole body

Phase 4: Resolution 

During this phase, your body returns to normal functioning. Swollen or inflamed areas revert to their original size. Many individuals feel satisfied but also fatigued.

Certain women can reenter the orgasm phase with more stimulation and may have additional orgasms. After orgasm, males need a refractory period to recover, during which they are unable to achieve another orgasm. The refractory period length varies with age.

How to increase arousal? 

Prolonging foreplay can enhance sexual excitement.

This means that before sexual intercourse or masturbation, you take time to arouse yourself by experimenting with different erogenous zones, such as the G-spot, using different sex toys, or trying different kinds of sensual touch.
